Let’s interject with a short story.

Years before transatlantic flights were common, a man wanted to travel from Europe to the US. He worked hard and saved his money. Eventually he had saved enough to board a cruise ship. The trip at that time took between 2 to 3 weeks to cross the ocean. Having spent nearly all his money on the fare, he purchased a suitcase and filled it with cheese and crackers.

During the voyage, when it came to eat, he would make his way to the dining area, but instead of sitting at a table, crouched in a corner to eat his cheese and crackers. The man in the corner felt embarrassed and explained how he only had enough money to buy a ticket for the journey across the ocean and had nothing left to buy food.

The gentleman replied, “Sir, didn’t you realise the food was included in the price of the ticket. The meals have already been paid for”.

When I first heard this story, how many people do you know have missed out and retreated into the corner. The man in the story had a goal, but he failed to address his shortfalls. True story or not, I feel this is not untypical of people making their way through life.

What is the difference between those who make things happen compared to those that don’t? One of the differences is that those who are on a mission, want something so badly is driven by having a vision. They know what they are striding for, can see it and taste it. They follow through and do what is necessary to get to their destination. It’s like someone just filling bags with sand compared to someone looking to prevent a town from flooding. See the difference?

Getting to ones destination is based on the bigger picture and not those mundane repetitive activities done on a day to day basis. If you have lost your guiding light to what it is you are looking to achieve then seriously stop what you are doing. Take time out and sit back. If you are frustrated then this may be down to the lack of a system.

Take a high level view to what is going on. Are you achieving the expected results? Are you heading in the right direction? Really question yourself. Make a list of everything that is working. Aim for at least ten things. This should help shift your mind onto what is working as opposed to that that isn’t. It is really easy to lose sight, but setting a vision will help you get back on course.

How many times have you come up with an idea, do nothing about it and then find later the idea is being marketed. This has happened to me many times and sure I’m not alone. It all comes down to seizing the opportunity and making life changing choices. You will never be successful at anything if you keep putting things off or taking too long to make a decision – missing out.
In the 1870s two men worked extensively on modifying and improving telegraphy at a time working on technology much different to that of today. Both men were looking at transmitting sound down a wire and both explored the transmission of the human voice electronically.

What’s remarkable about this event is that both Alexandra Graham Bell and Elisha Gray filed their ideas at the patent office on the same day. On February 14, 1876, Gray filed a caveat (declaration for the intension to apply for a patent) with the U.S. Patent Office for a telephone design that used a water transmitter. That same morning, Bell's lawyer filed Bell's application with the patent office. Bell was the first person to file for a patent and was a result of Elisha Gray losing time on other things. At that point, those lost minutes cost Grey a fortune.

Why share this with you? This is a good example, not about how someone lost out big time, but more to the point about someone seizing the moment. You really don’t want to miss the boat especially if you have Ideas Working From Home you wish to market.

I have written a number of articles now in relation to leadership. Why is this? I’m helping people to build a life of their own design. In other words, if you are not happy where your life is heading then I’m providing some ways to help change it. Agree it is not simple, but doing something now will have an impact later no matter how long it takes.
Creating and building a life of your own design takes commitment, focus and passion. Say for instance you have some great Ideas Working From Home. Admiral Nelson, who defeated the French at the battle of Trafalgar, would often go below deck to spend time with his junior officers. This practice was unheard of. He didn’t go down to tell them what to do or to give them orders, but to listen to their stories because he was inspired by their energy and passion. They brought youth, spark, excitement and optimism. They had no experience. As we go up the ranks, we lose that passion despite gaining experience.

Nelson felt it was important to spend time with that youth to keep him energised. Equally he needed to share his experience to help the others grow.

This is a classic case of serving others, a leadership skill, and is not built into our culture or society as well as it should be.

Have you heard the term ‘servant leadership’? You generally never hear from people ‘I aspire to be a leader’, ‘I want to be a leader’, ‘I’m working on becoming a leader’. You normally hear ‘I want to be a leader of people’, ‘training my people to become leaders of people’ etc. In other words, we aspire to be a leader of people, not just a leader. There are no leaders of a company. This is the difference between leadership and management. A leader is responsible to those that follow them.

Getting results through influence is a leadership skill. Influence in business is much driven by authority; ‘I’m the boss and I’m going to tell you what to do!’ This is opposed to giving people access to your time and experience in order for them to learn and grow. If you have the experience, make it available to others – remain open.

What makes someone a lasting leader? Lasting leadership is not what is on the outside but what is within. It has everything to do with your character. This could be compared to beauty; getting your perspective right. It’s not about your hair style, expensive jewellery, lovely clothes, but the beauty within.

There was story about a department store selling beauty products and looking for a beautiful person to be pictured in a marketing campaign. The store asked its customers to send in pictures along with a story about the most beautiful women they knew. Thousands of letters were received. However, one particular letter got everyone’s attention hence was passed onto the president. Beside the picture was a note written by a boy from a broken home in a run down neighbourhood.

The note read:

‘A beautiful woman lives down the street from me. I visit her everyday. She makes me feel like the most important kid in the world. She listens to my problems, understands me, when I leave she always yells out the door – she is proud of me. The picture attached shows you she is the most beautiful woman in the World and one day hope to have a wife as pretty as her’.

Intrigued, the president of the company then looked at the picture. He was shown the photograph of a smiley toothless woman, bound in a wheel chair, spots, brown hair, wrinkles diminished by the twinkle in her eyes.

The president couldn’t use the picture in the campaign because he knew no beauty products were going to be needed to make this lady beautiful as beauty was driven from within.

I don’t know about you, but I find life is full of challengers and everyday something turns up. If running your own small business, whether a brick and mortar or a home business, how do you cope with adversity? We all have our bad days and some may appear to be the end of life as you know it – taking it to the extreme.

There was a time when I struggled when I took it upon myself to join one of the Multi Level Marketing Opportunities to change my future. When I ran out of friends and family, with virtually no one turning up at the house parties and enthusiasm dying, I felt deflated, disappointed and it seriously bothered me. Was this the time to give up? Yes!

So what does it take to build a life of your own design? Well it boils down to a couple of things. Looking for the best and dealing with the worst….

When Thomas Carlyle (Dec 1795 – Feb 1881) completed his manuscript of the French Revolution, he asked a neighbour (John Mill) to read it. Later John turned up at Thomas’s house shaking and looking pale. He explained that his maid had inadvertently used the manuscript to light a fire. Thomas was left in despair. Two years of work up in smoke – literally.

Writing the manuscript was daunting enough, but thinking about rewriting it was just unthinkable.

One day he watched a stone mason building a wall. He observed it going up one brick at a time. This simple exercise inspired Thomas to rewrite the manuscript a page a day – similar to one brick at a time.

It was a slow process, but he persevered. The end result was much better than the original.

Jon Gordon writes; “if concerned about the future, then I know how you feel”.

He lost his job in 2001. The company sank quicker than the Titanic. He thought it was his worst day of his life. A paycheck away from losing it all, with a wife, 2 children and a mortgage etc. and no savings, he had to make some important decisions. Standing tall and not giving in led to the work he does today as a writer and a speaker. He went from being fired to being all fired up. Being laid off led to the accomplishment of his life’s mission. What he thought was his worst day turned out to be his best.

When the worst hits; you have a choice. Move forward with determination as the best days are ahead. Make a decision and learn to grow.

Don’t be a victim of your circumstances. See your situation as an opportunity. You can make the right choices. Refocus, retune and relive. Go out and get what you want.

In October 1972, an amateur rugby team were flying out from Uruguay en route to chile over the Andes when the plane struck a snow covered mountain in an area so remote and rugged that most of the mountains in the area didn’t have names.

With around 45 people on board, 12 of the passengers and both pilots were killed on impact as the plan broke in two before coming to rest.

If surviving the crash was one thing, the cold snowy and icy wintery conditions made the situation worse. The passengers were dressed for the summer, and had very little clothing to protect them against the elements.

By day 10, 27 people were still alive. By this time, they concluded the rescue mission would have stopped and they were now on their own.

With little food left, they started to fight amongst themselves. Things were becoming desperate.

Day by day some would venture to explore. They improvised where they could in terms of snow wear i.e. making snow shoes from the plane seats.

By day 18, an avalanche struck the plane killing a further 8 people. Only 19 now remained alive. The safest place to meet their fate was to remain within the wrecked fuselage. Some were starting to think it was easier to die than to stay alive…

On day 60 a decision was made for 3 people to venture out in a last bid to look for help. It was to be a one way trip and they knew it. With no experience, dressed inappropriately and ill equipped, Fernando, Roberto and Antonio left the safety of the plane. They would take a course based on the planes last heading and would continue until they either died or reached help. Either way they were going.

As they began the journey, they kept coming across false summits. Exhausted, cold and hungry they just kept on going. With the mountains being so high, it felt like no progress was being made. But there was no going back. 10 days later and having walked 37 miles, Roberto and Fernando found help. Antonio returned back to the plane en route.

As a result of the effort of Fernando and Roberto, 16 survivors were rescued out of the mountain – all surviving a 72 day ordeal they will never forget. Although part of this story is controversial, the interesting part is how Roberto and Fernando managed to make the 37 mile journey as afterwards, professional mountaineers retraced their steps. It was hard to believe that 2 people with no experience, tools or equipment made such a journey across the mountains. It was achieved with amazing spirit and strong will. They may not have been equipped, but they had the will to keep going forward. A goal worth living for.

In life, it is not about the tools and training, but how we show up in times of adversity. This true story is one of many to help put into perspective how we as humans have a uniqueability and resilience to survive.

As leaders or entrepreneurs, progress is made by leaving the safety of the ‘fuselage’ to gain freedom. Here are some testing questions back to you in respect to the passage above:

·         What desires do you have worth living for?  

·         What motivates you to be productive and to reach your destination?

·         What keeps you moving forward once completely worn out?

·         What makes you refuse to quit when faced with defeat or opposition?

What is interesting, it is 400 times more likely that people will do or buy something from someone they know and trust - word and mouth marketing. Communication methods have change. Once, and was certainly the case for most of my life, getting to know or to learn about someone was by physically meeting them. Today, in the information age, people get to know people through a virtual world – texts on the mobile, social media and other forms of communication through the internat. We communicate in short burst of exchanged information. Relationships are formed without ever meeting anyone. The virtual world can be make believe, exaggerated or embellished to firstly promote attraction and secondly to make that connection.

4.      Develop friendship of internet. When someone posts on your wall. Return the favour.

5.      Personal training blog. Learn to provide useful information. You can as a starter use information from others, but this needs to be put into your own words. In time you will generate your own information. If you live what you are preaching then it will be real. In other words make sure you are walking the talk. Learn to be an influence. You must do or have done what you are talking about. Don’t tell someone something if there is no intent to follow up – backing out of a commitment.

6.      Always answer people’s questions. Also thank people. This is making a statement about you.

7.      Keep your wall clean.

8.      Don’t feel you can’t remove people. Like with anything, water the seeds, but kill the weeds. The analogy applies to keeping your wall and postings clean.

One needs to be aware what is going on inside ones head. What you believe determines what you think. What you think determines what you do. What you do paths out and determines your life. In other words, you become what you believe. This could be no further from the truth when looking to build a business with Ideas Working From Home.

We may not always get what we wish for or deserve in life, but generally we don’t get more than what we expect either. Unfortunately this works strongly when feeling negative. Being negative is a choice and can limit both vision and focus.

A guy named Nick worked in the rail industry in an old railway yard. He was a strong tough man who liked his work. In fact he was one of the best employees. He arrived on time, was both reliable and hard working. He also got on well with his co-workers. However, he had one major problem. His attitude was chronically negative.

Nick’s reputation went before him. He was known as the most pessimistic man on the job. He perpetually feared the worst and constantly worried that one day something bad will happen.

One summer day, the crew were told to go home early to change in order to celebrate a birthday of the foreman. They all left except Nick who was just keen to finish the job he was on before joining his co-workers.

As Nick did the final round to ensure there were no lose ends, he managed to lock himself in a refrigerated box car that had been brought into the yard for repairs. The box was empty and not connected to any of the trains. Once he realised he was locked in, he started to panic. He began beating the door of the carriage so hard that his arms and hands become bloody. He screamed as loud as he could until his voice gave out.

Aware of his surrounds, he guessed the temperature was well below freezing. Nick fearing the worst, he waited for the inevitable – to either freeze to death or to suffocate. Shivering, he found a pen and piece of paper and started to write a note…“If I don’t get out soon, these will be the last words I will ever write”. And they were!

The next morning when the crew turned up for work, they found Nick’s body in the box car. The autopsy revealed that Nick did freeze to death. But there was an interesting enigma. On investigating Nick’s death, it was discovered the refrigerator unit on the carriage was in fact switched off as it was out of order. The temperature in the box when Nick froze was as high as 60 degrees – that slightly less at the normal room temperature.

Nick lost his life as a result of the thoughts and fears within his mind. He feared the worse and this came to pass.

There are many who fear the worst and yes the story above does take this to the extreme. People expect and encourage defeat in what they say and think. You see and hear this all the time. These people normally get what they expect and become what they believe.

If this is you then it is time to change. Learn to have a positive outlook, choose to believe in good things and keep negative thoughts at bay. Learn to firstly inspire yourself then secondly inspire others.

You will find it difficult to succeed at home or in business if you don’t believe firstly you are capable and secondly willing. Learn to truly believe in the scope of leadership and will you break the negative barrier and conquer your mind. Start believing today and see what results become forthcoming.

Almost everyone got off the plane except an old lady. The lady happened to be blind and by her side she had a Seeing Eye dog. Alone, she sat quietly at her seat. As the pilot went to stretch his legs, he noticed the lady and approached her and said,

“Hello, we are likely to be here for an hour so would you like to stretch your legs.”

“No thanks, but maybe Buddy my dog would like to” replied the lady.

All the people in the gate area were all in a complete astonishment and stopped what they were doing when they saw the pilot walking off the plane with a Seeing Eye dog leading the way. What made the situation appear to be worse was the pilot was wearing dark sun glasses.

People ran over to the help desks, not only to try and change their plane, but were even looking to change to a completely different airline company.

Was this an inappropriate action? Probably no fault to the people, but they did not have all the information. They reacted to what they saw and made an interpretation. No matter where you are in life or in business, things aren’t always what they seem.

There is a mindset discipline involved here. Making and having a discipline to respond with the appropriate action. It’s an application of self discipline and one of reacting and taking action based on all the facts. Time is valuable and one can not waste such time and energy reacting and responding to something based on how it may appear.

In life, one also needs to challenges excuses. One cannot struggle and then blame it on excuses. You need to develop a lifestyle of discipline and one of the first mental disciplines is to eliminate any tendency to make excuses.

If there are several reasons why you can’t do something, become focused and move on to get to the next level. Even when things are tough, they may not always be as they appear.

When learning something new, it may not be easy or simple and may take time. Just like if you were travelling in a car to get from say one city to another. You may not know all the turns, twists and detours in the road before you make that journey.
